
Fens Trails
An ideal way to get the most out of a visit to the Fens is to follow the first of our Fens trails. The trail will take you on a journey to various locations around the Lincolnshire Fens to discover the wealth of history and heritage we have. We have carefully chosen six different locations across the Lincolnshire Fens that link to a theme within Fenscape - the new interactive discovery centre at Springfields, Spalding. At each location we have installed a variety of displays, including:- 3d models, a village trail, sculptures, touch screen computers and information boards. These improvements will make learning about a particular aspect of Fens history enjoyable. Learn about the changes in the landscape and environment following the drainage of the Fens at Pinchbeck Engine, near Spalding. At Moulton Mill, near Spalding you will find out how windmills worked with the environment, people, society and Agriculture. Long Sutton was once a thriving port, find out what effect the land drainage had on the town of Long Sutton at The Market House, Long Sutton. Follow one of three trails around the village of Swineshead to discover the village’s connections with King John and its important religious history Discover more about the voyages of Matthew Flinders - the first person to circumnavigate Australia at the village of Donington. Freiston Shore was once a Victorian sea side resort and is now an RSPB nature reserve. Visit here to see what a seaside holiday was like during this era and see how a modern day innovative flood defence programme has created the newest RSPB reserve in the country.
