You may not connect yachting with the Fens but remember how close the sea is. Sailors from all over Britain and many from abroad - are discovering that the Wash is a wonderful cruising ground. It is just 11 miles up the tidal River Nene to Wisbech, the heart of the Fens.

Wisbech is still a busy commercial port, but the town is rapidly gaining a reputation as a superb spot for small craft. More than a million pounds has been spent on Wisbech Yacht Harbour in the last 3 years. It now boasts nearly 600 metres of pontoons, with over 60 permanent berths and another 15 for visitors. State of the art CCTV and secure catwalk access have been installed so that boats can be safely left while the crew explore the town.

So if you own a boat and you like to keep ahead of the yachting pack - mark Wisbech on your chart!.

The Fenland inland waterways offer extensive cruising in an atmospheric landscape of wide horizons and dramatic sunsets. As yet, the rivers remain uncrowded, although those who visit are keen to return.  The Nene-Ouse Navigation Link is a small, but important part of the Fenland waterways system. It links the River Great Ouse and River Nene which in turn leads to the Grand Union Canal and the main inland waterways of England.

The Nene-Ouse Link travels from Stanground Lock near the Cathedral City of Peterborough to a lock near the small village of Salters Lode, close to the Denver Sluice complex. The Link is 28½ miles long and is the recommended navigation route between the Rivers Nene and Ouse passing through the market towns of Whittlesey and March and villages of Upwell, Outwell and Nordelph on the Norfolk border.

Fox’s Marina is situated on the outskirts of March and is the only ‘working’ marina on the Link route. It offers important facilities to boat users such as repairs, moorings, fuel, slipway, hoist and permanent moorings. There are also luxury narrow boats to hire for holidays and short breaks. A typical week’s boating holiday could take you to the Cathedral City of Ely and the University City of Cambridge.

For further information, visit www.foxboats.co.uk. There is a small marina with a slipway and club-house at Floods Ferry between March and Whittlesey and Bill Fen Marina is just off the Link route at Ramsey.
