Horses
Equestrian facilities are extensive in the Fens, as the unique environment offers ideal hacking facilities both on bridleways and quiet country lanes, with no heavy inclines for horse and rider. There are stables and riding schools across the Fens all willing to help the novice and expert gain confidence in a relaxing and rewarding country pursuit, together with some riding schools offering "Own a Pony Days", for the budding Pippa or Zara. Take quiet country lanes through some picture book villages, or travel on ancient tracks, once the key to the rural economy, over which the local farm produce would have been taken to market. Local riding shows and competitions take place in many areas of the Fens during the summer months, where local residents and visitors share their knowledge of horse and rider. |

Until the tractor was invented, the main source of power was the heavy horse. Shire horse was the breed most closely associated with The Fens.
