Kirton
The large Fenland village of Kirton now stands in relatively peace following the bypassing of the A16. Once a market town, a few eighteenth century houses survive in the wide main street. A good selection of shops including a butcher, tea rooms and two bakeries are to be found in the centre of the village. The handsome parish church of St Peter and St Paul with its perpendicular style central tower was rebuilt in 1805. Opposite the church is the former King’s Head built in 1699, and is often described as an example of ‘Fen Artisan Mannerism, being in brick with window sills that almost touch the payment outside. Craft and Antique Fairs often take place in the Town Hall which was built in 1911. Outside the Town Hall is a statue by Lindley Clark of William Dennis a local benefactor. Other outdoor events often take place at Graves Park, including a spectacular Firework Display each November. The Park also has children’s recreational facilities and a clubhouse. |
